3 CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WISE WOMAN

A Wise Woman
“A wise woman builds her house” (Proverbs 14.1a).

Many of us are familiar with the above verse, but what does it really mean to build your house with wisdom? In this article I would like to address three characteristics that the wise woman certainly possesses. There are many others, but at this time we will look at just three.

What are these three characteristics?

  • First: The wise woman has an intimate relationship with God. She knows that without God nothing is possible for her. “Let not the book of this law depart out of your mouth, but meditate in it day and night, that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous and succeed” (Joshua 1.8).

When we seek the Lord and His will for our lives before we decide anything or take any action, we are giving honor to God, and recognizing that without Him there is no way to have a blessed relationship. If we want to have a marriage that bears fruit for the glory of God, a relationship where the blessings of the Lord reach us, then we need to meditate on God’s Word daily and have intimacy with the Lord.

Before building a strong and unshakable marriage, the wise woman builds a strong and unshakable relationship with God. We will only be successful in building our home and family if we have a personal and deep relationship with the Lord.

-Second: The wise woman is aware that she is in the midst of a great spiritual warfare and that she needs to remain alert and watchful for Satan’s attacks on her life and family. The devil, your enemy, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour” (l Peter 5.8). Satan is all around us, says the Word of God, looking for an opportunity, a gap where he can settle down to destroy us!

The wise woman is directed by the Holy Spirit of God. She makes prayer her most powerful weapon against the enemy’s attacks.

She puts on the armor of God, “So stand firm, girding yourselves with the belt of truth, wearing the breastplate of righteousness, and having your feet shod with the readiness of the gospel of peace.

Moreover, wear the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Wear the helmet of Salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God; (Ephesians 6.14,17). God would not give us spiritual armor to wear if it were not necessary. The wise woman leaves no loopholes for satan.

-Third: The wise woman speaks with wisdom. “A word spoken at the right time is like golden fruit inlaid on a silver carving” (Proverbs 25.11). Women are known for their great capacity for verbal expression. Women like to talk. They need to talk. More than men, even. This can often be a problem, if she does not pay attention to the content of her speech. A calm answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger” (Proverbs 15.1). The wise woman knows the power of words and uses them to build up her house, not tear it down!

God’s Word exhorts us to act wisely. The same verse that tells us about the wise woman who builds her house, also tells us that the foolish woman tears it down with her own hands… May we be women led by the Holy Spirit of God, and build our homes with wisdom. Founding our homes on the rock that is Jesus Christ.

Remember beloved sister in Christ; there is no success in a home that does not honor and glorify the Lord. Take time out of your day to be in God’s presence. Pray, watch, and put on the armor of God. And be wise in your words and manner of speaking. I believe that our God, who is rich in love and mercy, will pour great blessings on your life, in Jesus’ name.
